Outsourcing has been around for a while now, up until recently, however it has been in in a somewhat bloated state as the challenges of employing offshore workers have meant that companies in the U.S. and other Western countries have had to either hire a BPO firm to handle their outsourcing needs or to actually set up an office in another country and run that office as an extension of their company. This has certainly been worthwhile for large companies, however small businesses and entreprenuerial start-up companies have not been able to take advantage of outsourcing the way that large corporations have been able to.
Technology is changing the way outsourcing can be done by allowing companies to use a less structured method of employing workers, rather than needing to set up offices in a foreign country, it is now possible to employ workers as long as they have access to a high speed internet connection. By running a virtual desktop environment on a computer server, the worker can connect and work directly on this desktop under the direction of the company. This method gives the company and the worker more flexibilty while still being able to ensure that the work is being done correctly and also preventing the remotely based employee from stealing files off of the server.
Outsourcing of the past can be thought of as a few streams of work that led to the United States, for example, the outsourcing centers have been focused in specific geographic regions across the world, such as Mumbai and Hyderbad India. The people living in other parts of India and other countries around the world have been unable to tap into this stream, however by making full use of technology companies can now "open the floodgates" so to speak and give the opportunity to a qualified worker anywhere in the world as long as that worker has access to a high speed internet connection.
